To Our SYJCC Community,
Applying to college in today’s extraordinarily competitive environment is a process fraught with fear and anxiety. We-parents and students alike-become consumed. Where to apply? What to write the all-important essay about? How to explain challenges we have faced? Will I be accepted by my dream school? And we worry with good reason. Acceptance rates at our nation’s most competitive schools dropped again this past year, with some accepting just 5% of applicants.
As my son is currently in the midst of this process, these questions, concerns and hopes are part of my daily experience, and I want the SYJCC to be a place where families can find direction and support in this process.
We are therefore excited to announce our partnership with Rachel Stier Advising and OTO (“Overcome The Overwhelm”) Academy. Serving students and professionals for over 10 years, Rachel Stier, herself a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania as well as New York University’s School of Law, has guided successful applicants to many top programs, including Cornell University, Northwestern University and the University of Pennsylvania. Rachel is excited to bring OTO Academy to the SYJCC because she believes, “the beauty of applying to college is that, when done right, it is a tremendous learning process. You realize you have accomplished more than you thought over the course of high school. You start to take ownership of your choices. You grow, you work hard and you think critically about who you are and who you want to be-for yourself and for your community. It is not just about the numbers.” OTO Academy supplements the resources provided by our schools, allowing students to maximize their chances of success while moderating the additional expense of private college coaching.
Having successfully launched our first series of college essay writing workshops this summer and fall, we recognize our unique opportunity to expand and improve how we support your family and our community. We welcome the chance to make the college process a little bit easier and a little bit less frightening. To shed additional light on this topic, as well as further explain our new program, we invite you to join us for a FREE information session taking place on October 20th, 2016 from 7:30-8:30 PM at the SYJCC. By popular demand, we have scheduled a follow-up essay writing workshop designed to provide high school seniors with some last-minute individualized pointers before finalizing and submitting their college applications. This workshop will take place on Sunday, October 23rd from 10am-11:30am at SYJCC. Click here to view flyer
We wish all of our high school seniors and families the best of luck with all of the important decisions you will make in the next few months.
