Theater in the Workplace Transition Program
For ages 21+

This new program provides adults with special needs who have aged out of the school system & have not yet achieved the skills necessary to move into the workforce an opportunity to attend a theater vocational development program. Theater in the Workplace will focus on theater-related jobs and skills for career development. Learn & practice vocational skills in the theater industry taught by a series of professionals.

Skills that will be worked on:
• Interpersonal Skills
• Communication Strategies
• Customer Service
• Teamwork
• Problem Solving
• Community Participation
• Technology/Media

Theater jobs we will learn & practice:
• Box Office
• House Manager
• Usher
• Concessions
• Prop & Costume Crew
• Stage Crew
• Fundraising

Additional Information:
• 2-year program enrollment
• Weekly class runs 2.5 hours per day

Cohort 1: Wednesday 3:30-6:00 pm | Sunday 1:30-4:00 pm
Cohort 2: Monday & Friday 10:00 am-12:30 pm
(schedule subject to change for intern experience during SYJCC plays)

• This program will include field experience with the plays at the SYJCC 600-person theater.
• Small group cohorts

Stretch and Tone

Warm up with a series of cardio exercises, walk/jog, and games like freeze-tag. That is followed by stretching and balance activities.
Equipment like stability balls, Pilates rings, etc. is used as well. Strength training is done at the end of the class using body weight
activities like push-ups, sit-ups, etc.

Basic Theater Practices

This class will teach the basics of theater through individual and collaborative applied drama techniques, such as, theater games, improvisation, role play, and voice and body work. Theater practices can improve communication and inferencing skills, coping and problem solving strategies, and overall happiness.

Water Aerobics

Immerse in water while doing aerobic exercise. Combine the sensory benefit of being in the water with a low impact workout. Water aerobics is great for cardiovascular health and increased flexibility and mobility.

Comprehensive Case Management

Offered through Suffolk Y JCC and Mid-Island Y JCC

– Educates individuals and their families on the government benefits that they are eligible for.

-Hands on assistance in the application processes for NYS benefits/entitlements including but not limited to OPWDD, Medicaid, Medicaid Waiver and SS(D)I from start to finish.

-Creates customized action plans with the individuals and their families to help them reach their goals!

-In partnership with AANE – Intensive Family Coaching  includes understanding and exploring options and priorities for developing a comprehensive long term plan for a family member with an Asperger/Autism profile.
