The Pantry at SYJCC Feeding Long Island’s Hungry
The Pantry at the Suffolk Y JCC focuses on homebound seniors and low-income families throughout Long Island. Nearly half of the people we help are poor or near poor. The other half are people who are now struggling because of the current crisis. The monthly requests for assistance have quadrupled since March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. We receive new requests every single day!
In addition to non-perishable foods, household supplies and personal care items, The Pantry now has volunteers shopping for perishable groceries and delivering them to seniors and families in need. We are also delivering pre-made meals to homebound seniors as well as providing curbside pick-up for seniors that are able to come to us to pick up meals. More than 400 meals are distributed to seniors each week!
No one should go hungry on Long Island! The Pantry prides itself on maintaining people’s dignity by providing what they want and need. We address a family’s dietary needs, provide kosher food items, and make sure that kids have their favorite foods and brands.
The Sharing Table at The SYJCC Pantry
Take what you need, and leave what you can, if you can
The Sharing Table philosophy is “Take what you need, and leave what you can, if you can.” The Sharing Table provides food to individuals and families struggling with food insufficiency in a dignified fashion. Volunteers bring food, toiletries and cleaning supplies and help organize the Sharing Table. Those in need come to shop at the Sharing Table. More than 40 individuals and families visit the Sharing Table each day and this number will grow with support from the community.
As our programs grow, so does the need for support from our community. There are many ways you can help!
Please consider making a monetary donation to help The Pantry and the Sharing Table during this critical time. Your support will help feed thousands of Long Islanders suffering from food insecurity.
By donating non-perishable food items, household cleaning supplies and personal care items, you can help us provide needed items to seniors and families in Suffolk County.
Our list changes weekly, so please check our website to see our most current needs.
This week we are requesting:
- Breakfast Foods
- Full Size Toiletries
- Canned Fish and Meat
- Toilet Paper & Paper Towels
- Cleaning Supplies
Collection bins are located in the front lobby of the SYJCC for easy drop off of non-perishables for The Pantry. Donations for the Sharing Table can be left in this bin or in the bin at the Sharing Table.
Perishable foods must be dated, not expired and placed into the refrigerator at the Sharing Table.
If you have a large donation of food and need assistance or have questions please email us at email@example.com prior to dropping off.
