SYJCC Senior Center includes a variety of weekday programs for older adults including discussion groups, entertainment, speakers, educational programs, Shabbat, holiday celebrations, and special events.

SENIOR NUTRITION

Senior Nutrition Program offers a daily lunch for seniors 60+ Mon-Fri for a suggested contribution of $4/meal.  All meals are made fresh daily by our in-house caterer Chick Chak Café. These programs receive funding support from Suffolk County Office For Aging

SENIOR EXERCISE CLASSES

Sit & Fit

This class allows the participant to exercise while seated or standing depending on the individual’s strength and endurance.  The class includes stretching, light hand weights, and stretch bands for resistance strengthening and stretching.

Chair Yoga

In this chair-based class, you will learn yoga positions, gentle stretching, and breathing techniques to help you maintain flexibility and balance. This class is designed for those that need a chair-based class and are unable to participate in conventional yoga on a mat.

Tai Chi for Balance

In this class, you will learn Tai Chi poses and positions that will improve your balance and core strength. This class is designed for seniors and those with a limited range of motion or physical limitations.  Chairs are provided for balance and support.

CONCERTS IN MOTION

Concerts in Motion brings together professional musicians and youth for engaging performances that include interaction with the musicians. These programs are in partnership with Concerts in Motion and will feature different musicians each week.

NEW- Learn to Play Mahjong

Students will learn the basics of American Mahjongg through guided games that allow students to learn by playing. You will learn the tiles, scoring, and distinct game mechanics of American Mahjongg. Students must purchase a Mahjongg card at nationalmahjonggleague.org

NEW- Introduction to Yiddish

with Jonathan Geffner
A Yiddish scholar, teacher, and translator. He has a B.A. in Yiddish language and literature and has taught Yiddish classes for adults and children in many places.

Students will learn the basics of useful Yiddish conversation, and pronunciations as well as a familiarity with dialect differences. Topics covered will be, personal introductions, family relationships, eating, drinking, traveling, visiting, activities, professions, hobbies, vacations, emotions, idiomatic expressions and phrases, and more! This program is geared to beginners but those who have a rudimentary knowledge of Yiddish will benefit from it as well.

NEW- Drama Kings & Queens

with Gayle Gitlitz
An actor, singer, and educator with her degree in Master of Arts in Theater and English education. Gayle has taught Theater in a private, charter, and public schools in New York City, and directed the Theater program at Camp Wah-Nee.

Participants will go through the process of creating a character and digging into play. Through the process of character building, teamwork, and acting games, participants will work together to discuss the play, characters, and if desired a final performance! All scenes will be specifically chosen for the individuals in the class.

SYJCC Social Clubs- Open House Program

Meet the members of the Suffolk Y JCC Social Clubs. 

The Women’s and Men’s Clubs invites all adults 60+ to join them for this stimulating, interesting and special program with speaker Renee Steinig through zoom.

In the course of decades of genealogical research Renee Steinig has uncovered many “skeleton in the closet” cases of mental illness, an illegitimate birth, infidelity, abandonment, and even murder, all hushed up for decades. A Viennese refugee whose baby was born in a New York State psychiatric hospital; a suburban businessman who led two lives; a Romanian immigrant hanged or so his family thought for “stealing horses”; a Jewish GI’s love affair in Belgium during World War II; a young woman who married, had a baby, then vanished. Renee will talk about these family secrets, research tools that uncovered them, and the reunions, and reconciliations that followed many of her discoveries.
